Mirror Mirror

Whatever you do, don’t look in the mirror.

Jaime thought he’d hit the jackpot when he found the antique mirror out by the curb, just waiting for a new home. Hours later the old mirror with the ornate gold frame was taking up pride of place in his apartment.
But there’s something wrong.
The mirror harbors a dark secret, and before long Jaime and his girlfriend Cassie find themselves up against a terrifying supernatural force that has its sights set on them.

A tale of haunting that will make you think twice before walking past a mirror.

I found myself drawn in and fascinated by this short story. When Jamie Beaumont finds an old ornate mirror someone had just thrown out, he was happy to retrieve it, just free for the taking, Of course, everyone knows not everything is actually free.Jamie is going to learn that lesson the hard way. The author does a great job with a short read that feels like a novel. I am really interested in picking up more works by this author.

This was a great short read! This new horror author grips you tight and doesn’t let go – captivating through the whole book – I was so engrossed in the story that I felt like I was there – everything else around me as I was reading this book just fades into the background – definitely a 5 star book – this is the second book I have read from this author and I love his writing style – will be looking for more in the future from this author!

Sanctuary 12

Nine strangers, linked by the inner whisperings of a mysterious little girl. Each must piece together the origins of their other-worldly abilities and the location of the white manor, where they will be reunited, and the questions that have plagued their existence will finally be answered. But someone else marks their every step. The sinister Mr Cradleworth has other plans for them, plans that could bring about catastrophic consequences, not just for earth, but the whole universe.

This epic tale covers half the globe, as it follows each character into the darkest recesses of their soul. Combining eighties-style horror with science fiction, this dark fantasy will take you on a journey you will never forget.

This has to be one of the most interesting books I have read! I love how each chapter is devoted to one or a set of characters. The story is about a group of people and one dog, who are drawn to one another by a little girl. They all have special gifts and each has unfortunate things happening in their lives. Why is everything happening? There are answers to be had, you need to read the book. I truly believe every page in this book is necessary to the development of the story. The characters are well written and come alive in the pages. T. W. Malpass has written a book that is well worth you time to read. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

T.W. Malpass had me at “combining 80’s style horror with science fiction” with his review proposal for the eerily good Sanctuary 12.

An obvious homage to the horror great The House on Haunted Hill, Sanctuary 12 brings a depth to the genre that covers a gamut of human emotion, undesirable predicaments, and an intelligent opinion on the power of humanity. The novel itself finds nine strangers who are invariably linked by the ominous, frightful words of a young child. This link amongst them commences their journey towards understanding things about themselves they did not quite know were there, as well as where this young girl is located.

Little do they know, however, is that every single step they take is being intricately planned and organized by the malevolent Mr. Cradleworth. It’s like a massive game for Mr. Cradleworth in that he will do everything and anything within his power to prevent these special nine people to understand their true worth, or to find the mysterious girl who haunts their minds and dreams.

As in many horror/fantasy greats, T.W. Malpass brings the chosen nine, and the reader themselves, on a journey that encompasses places around the world in all of beautiful and grotesque states. Each of these special nine present a different fragment of the human soul, from redemption to justice to hope. Consolidated together they are powerful forces, but taken singularly, they are just as powerful. Malpass demonstrates a quick wit and capacity to present tales that are intriguing and captivating. These nine characters are all interesting on their own, what with their unique backgrounds and lots in life. They could each very well have a standalone novel should Malpass decide to go down that meta-route. United, they are a force to be reckoned with, without all of the cliché super-hero fodder that Hollywood likes to inject into its readers and viewers.

Malpass accomplishes something that only a few authors have successfully achieved. He has created nine separate character studies that lead to a plot that is driven by the quest for discovery. However, it is not the obvious literal discovery of the child that seemingly unites them all that drives them, but it is the goal of understanding themselves that makes Sanctuary 12 such a riveting read. It’s more than a horror novel, it’s a study in every person’s quest to try to understand who they really are.

Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper

Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper is Ghostbusters meets The Dresden Files. Fun and creepy.” -Daniel Arenson, USA Today bestselling author of Earthrise and the Song of Dragons series

Ellie Jordan’s job is to identify and remove unwanted ghosts. Part detective, part paranormal exterminator, Ellie operates out of Savannah, Georgia, the most haunted city in the United States.

When a family contacts her to deal with a disturbing presence in the crumbling old mansion they’ve purchased, Ellie first believes it to be a typical, by-the-book specter, a residual haunting by a restless spirit. Instead, she finds herself confronting an older and more powerful evil that dwells within the walls of the house, stalking the living.

Ellie must quickly unravel the secret history behind the haunting in order to remove the ghost. She is aided by her new assistant Stacey, a recent film school graduate with a gift for capturing images and video of ghosts, and Jacob, a reluctant young psychic. Together, they will try to evict the dangerous spirits of the dead, whose threats to the family grow more terrifying every night.

“A brilliantly addictive, insomnia-inducing story following Ellie Jordan, a ghost tracker, who works a hazardous job investigating hauntings. Read before bedtime at your own risk!” -Alexia Purdy, bestselling author of the Dark Faerie Tale and Reign of Blood series

All I can think right now is wow..…this book was awesome! I have never read anything by this author, but it sounded promising, well it delivered 100%! I am a night owl with insomnia,so while scrolling through Amazon I stumbled upon this book and paid the 99 cents. I figured if it was good, then yay for me ,and if it sucked,I was only out a dollar. So,around 2am,while my family blissfully snores down the hall,I settled in for a night of reading. I was hooked from the start! I couldn’t put it down. I will openly admit to being spooked by the paranormal, and believing in it as well. Since childhood I have had my own personal experiences with spirits and the unseen. Yet,I,at 2in the morning, all alone began to read….and whether you are a believer or not, JL Bryan will make you one!!!! This book has everything you could ask for in a horror story. Family buys creepy old Georgian mansion and intends to open a B&B. Except, something doesn’t want them there. The young daughter is the first to notice things, and when she told her family they, like many adults, believed it was just her nerves because of the move and the “newness” of the house. Well, pretty soon the mother begins to believe her daughter might be telling the truth. So, in step s Ellie Jordan and Stacey Talbert -ghost trappers!

I don’t want to say anymore and give out spoilers. I know it kept me hooked, and a couple of times my mind played tricks, which is to be expected reading a wonderful book of this genre in the pitch dark, the only light the glow from my kindle. When someone can write a book that gets you going to the point of hearing your own “bumps in the night”,that is an author! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a wonderfully spooky, suspenseful book that gets your heart racing and makes you look over your own shoulders a couple of times. In this day,it is so hard to find a good horror, anything! But,this one was for me. Thanks JL I absolutely loved it! Off to get the second one ,’Cold Shadows’. And as always,to my fellow readers……HAPPY READING!!!!! 🙂

“Addictive. Heartpounding. Fierce. For fans of Kelley Armstrong, Rick Yancey, and James Dasher.”
—Eve Silver, author of The Game series

A fun, quick, fast-moving story. There were times I would have preferred things to be a little more fleshed out, but with the quick pacing the author was trying to keep to, that wasn’t really possible. Overall the characters (and their dialogue) were portrayed fairly realistically in terms of how slightly smarter and more mature teenagers would act in such a situation, and the plot usually made sense and had some logic behind how things played out. The author wisely focused on the plot and the story of the monster (and its “relationship” with Bria) instead of having the teen romance be the main focus (with the story merely acting as a backdrop for the romance). One of the better YA novels I have read in a while. This author has a lot of potential and I’m looking forward to seeing where she takes the story in the future.

The Lonesome Dead

Beware the spirits of Lake Manuxet…

“Don’t look out towards Knob Island at night.” That was the warning Douglas’ grandfather gave him as a boy. Now returning to the shores of Lake Manuxet as a grown man, with his twin sister and their ailing grandmother in tow for a final, nostalgic visit, Douglas begins to experience frightful things in his cherished childhood vacation spot.

Just what is it that claws its way out of the lake each night, only to approach their cabin? What mysteries does the remote lake hold? Are the horrors Douglas experiences genuine, or is he simply inheriting the madness that seems to run in his family? What is the true nature of the cryptic warning his grandfather gave him so many years ago about the small island at the center of Lake Manuxet?

What begins as a sentimental pilgrimage to a once-enjoyable vacation spot rapidly deteriorates into a fight for survival and sanity.

The Lonesome Dead is a standalone novel of supernatural suspense and terror by Ambrose Ibsen.

A story of vengeance, murder and how sometimes you can not escape guilt. Nice characters, scary story about how guilt can kill. Ghost vengeance has no boundaries, and continue to haunt no matter how a person tries. Nice writing and captivating individuals. Recommended!!

I am so amazed at finding this book. i reject about 50 books for every one i read. much of this book could really happen, but it was horrible, regardless. the motive involved is really powerful. it is also scary, though. i got on his mailing list. i am spending all too much of my time musing over this book. more than haunting.

The Horror Squad: An Apocalyptic Tale

With the world now plagued by rotters, it’s up to my team and I to take care of the living and take out the dead.

W T F??? Grab you by the cajones from the get go. I honestly was thinking some of these guys were total tools, but can understand why they were the way they were. This is definitely a no holds barred, kill or be killed ZomPoc story. I cannot wait to start reading more books by TJ Weeks. Awesome!!

This is the first book that I have read from TJ Weeks but it will not be the last. I really enjoyed reading this book because I was reading about a few friends and now I a wondering if they will survive the zombie apocalypse! If you like this genre than this is a book worth reading. I hope the second book is almost done!

From the first page I was hooked on The Horror Squad. TJ’s style of writing is a wonderful read. It’s a story about the Zombie Apocalypse written in the first person. The descriptions of what is going on is in detail and adds many layers to the story. It follows a group of people that when they find out what is happening, they band together in order to survive the nightmare that was thrust upon them. With the undead all around them, they gather up their belongings and head to where they can be relatively safe. The families pool their resources and find a place to try and survive the nightmare they are just beginning to understand. You will find yourself immersed in the characters stories and won’t want to put the book down.

The Bad Box

Sarah Temple hopes to find a bit of peace and quiet when she leaves her abusive boyfriend, but instead she finds a world of horror. It’s bad enough that a sadistic serial killer and another maniac are both trying to murder her, but what’s worse is the mysterious Solitary One who controls both of them, a malevolent entity that the serial killer describes as a living darkness, a man and yet not a man, something that’s alive and yet not alive, something that wants to appall the world.

Trying to flee from the two killers, Sarah finds herself running deeper and deeper into a deadly supernatural trap, a place where people are buried alive, where ghastly apparitions mutter in the dark, where demented killers prowl, where a crumbling haunted house can drive its victims mad with terror, and where something buried for a very long time may walk again.

Harvey Click’s previous novel, HOUSE OF WORMS, had a decidedly Lovecraftian, pulpy atmosphere. This new one, THE BAD BOX, has a more modern, gloomy feel, ala King or Rice. This is not to say that Click is copying anyone…goodness no! His narratives have a style that I hope no Big City Editor ever convinces him needs to be smoothed out. It’s hard to talk about this book without fear of giving away important details, and I don’t want to diminish anyone’s pleasure (or is it agonizing torture? ) of reading this story of constant surprises.

Several horror cliches present themselves, but are handled in unexpected fashion. One thing I like about Harvey Click’s stories is he is able to write about characters far different from his own point of view. So many authors have characters that seem to have the same opinions and persona as their creator. Click’s character’s are always fascinating, and often not someone you’d care to be stuck in an elevator with.

Once again, fans of his previous book will find this one somewhat different, but still quite exciting, thoughtful and fun. Oh, and gruesome. Yeah, gotta have that in a Click novel, and this one doesn’t disappoint. I have to admit that at one point, reading it late at night, I, old curmudgeon that I am, got goose bumps. The common can become hellish. Click’s descriptive prose will have you feeling those same goosebumps too.

I have loved werewolves ever since seeing Lon Chaney’s role in the Wolfman. But the movie and book world has never really caught up to the potential of this mythical character. I have been flustered over the lack of good monster books until I was introduced to T.W. Piperbrooks first Outage novel by a good friend. He initially recommended it to me knowing of my hatred of all things winter, but once I got into the short novel I discovered the true horror of the tale: Werewolves! I waited and grabbed up these books as each came out, and my only wish is that I had been able to grab them all up in a collection. It is much better to be able and “devour” a great story in one stretch setting as opposed to waiting for each segment to come out, and now new readers will have this luxury. Forget zombies; push aside vampires; go for the gusto with the wolves! Only Jeff Strand with his pair of wolf novels “Wolf Hunt 1 &2” have been able to satisfy my urge for unadulterated monster mayhem as much as Piperbrook has with the Outage series. Read and enjoy; and then go our and get a copy of the original Lon Chaney Wolfman to watch. No better combo can be had!

So, I have never read anything by this author before, but I am always looking for something new and interesting to read so I download anything that catches my eye. That can really go either way. I was pleasantly surprised by these books. It took me a while to actually start reading them, but once I did, I read all three in two days. The story really sucks you in fast. There isn’t a slow, boring build up to the action, it starts off pretty fast and you get the characters’ back stories on the way. This doesn’t hurt the character development or your ability to identify with the characters at all. If anything, it is a much more entertaining way of doing it rather than wasting the first several chapter learning all about a character or setting. If you have ever lived in the Northeast, yo will have an understanding of what a flash snowstorm that knocks out the power quickly does to your perception of the world around you already so you will be able to identify. If you haven’t just know that pretty much everything the author says about it is pretty dead on accurate. The first book introduces the main characters, the setting and the situation. The second book goes into the full scope of the situation and the third book goes into the fight to survive. This is a different, more modern take on the werewolf story. It maintains a lot of the classic lore about the monsters, but updates them a little to make them more believable in today’s world. There really is no downtime in these books. The characters are either fighting or on the move to the next attack. It will certainly keep you entertained and along for the ride. It also isn’t some sappy, happy ending for all type of book so be careful what characters you get attached to. There is a lot of deceit and even more death. This is gory, messy, well detailed death so don’t be squeamish (I assume that if you read horror novels, you probably already aren’t). The author does a very good job being descriptive in all aspects so you get a very clear mental picture of all the surroundings, beasts and carnage. Is this the best book I have ever read? No. Is it super entertaining and do I plan on downloading more from this author? Absolutely. In fact, I downloaded Outage 4 the minute I finished Outage 3 and am starting it as soon as I finish this review. Releasing these books as a boxed set was a smart move because the individual books are short, but I would have downloaded 2,3 and 4 separately after reading 1 in a heartbeat. This series really pulls you in that fast.

Sugar Daddy: A Horror Thriller

Originally self-published in 2011, the short story “Sugar Daddy” quickly developed a cult-following and went on to win the Red Adept Reviews Indie Award for Horror.

A sequel beckoned. The author eventually caved, and with tongue planted in cheek he penned what many felt was an even crazier outing than the original.

Now, due to popular demand, “Sugar Daddy” and “Sugar Daddy 2” have been updated and combined into one terrifying and off-the-wall tale for your reading pleasure.

Author’s note: This story also appears in WARPED: A Menapace Collection of Short Horror, Thriller, and Suspense Fiction.

Several years ago, I read a short story titled “Sugar Daddy” by an author named Jeff Menapace. This was, I believe, his first published story. Sugar Daddy was such an original, creepy horror thriller that I went on to read the sequel, and since then I’ve read every short story and novel written by Mr. Menapace. After writing horror stories, he’s written several crackerjack psychological thrillers. But Sugar Daddy was where it all started, and I’ve reposted my Amazon and Goodreads reviews below.

It seemed like such a simple, foolproof plan. The five would-be thieves would break into the mansion at 1507 Elmwood, heist a small fortune in priceless antiques, fence the loot, and get away scot-free.

The plan couldn’t fail. The mansion was owned by a single woman who was away from the house for several hours. The thieves even had the house key. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, just about everything, actually, as the five thieves were in for an unimaginable horror fest in one of the most macabre stories that I’ve read in a long time.

Author Jeff Menapace has written a dandy horror story. It was a short, terror-filled tale that took me less than an hour to read. This was truly the stuff of nightmares, the kind of story that could cause some readers to wake up screaming in the middle of the night.

I hope I’m not one of them.
